The shorter days are upon us and the snow is coming (eek!). As we enter the wettest month of the year in the Lower Mainland (an average of 200mm in Vancouver alone!), it’s a perfect time to look towards your next adventure. While so many of us dream of boarding a cheap flight to somewhere sunnier, Jenn Lockhart heads deeper into the woods and farther away from the comforts of home.
Jenn Lockhart is an artist, adventurer & all around wicked woman that we spotted on Instagram and instantly new we had to know more. Her mantra? #AdventureEveryday How she achieves this is her signature mix of spontaneity (Jenn admits to having an impulsive streak ;) + the epic collection of gear she’s accumulated over the years which she uses to make a home almost anywhere; back of the car, swinging from a snowy tree or snugged up in a windy cove.
Having left her childhood home of Richmond BC, Jenn set off first for Field BC (with a resident population of less than 200 people!) before deciding on her current home town of Courtenay BC. In leaving her original community, she stripped herself of the comforts of friends, family & job which she attributes to some pretty cool new experiences.
In fact, one of Jenn’s four jobs is working with “We Thrive Outdoors” a group working to inspire a generation to get outdoors and inspire youth to seek careers in adventure tourism. She may never have gotten this opportunity if she hadn’t dumped a hot cup of coffee on one of the founders, Cole in a local Courtenay coffee shop. . .though we think that her quick wit and open smile may have helped her out of this one!
The truth of it is, Jenn is happiest when being outdoors. She thinks that embracing the idea of saying ‘yes’ instead of ‘no’ has helped her to get outdoors every single day! She has been known to pack a car at 9:00pm on a Friday and just head for the forest! Jenn’s enthusiasm for the outdoors & infact her passion for working with 'We Thrive Outdoor’s' is summed up wonderfully in her own words:
“Your job can take over 70% of your life, and getting people into jobs that are rewarding, exciting and inspiring, is going to change their lives. When that happens, they are going to be able to share that with others and get even more people out and sharing the world with each other. If I can be even a small part of making that happen for someone, then I have successfully done my part.”
Along with inspiring others to get outdoors and find their passion (editing some of Jenn’s video clips really got our video editors aching for fresh air and ocean breezes!) Jenn likes to focus on seasonal goals such as avalanche training and improving her skiing skills. Though her most recent goal was suggested to her over a campfire … dare? Since Jenn was primed to say ‘yes’ she is now committed to a goal of camping 50 nights outside before the end of 2017.
While working towards this goal what surprised Jenn the most was the number of free recreation camp sites there are on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. With the gear she’s accumulated and these free sites she spends only $20 on her weekend adventures (and that's just gas money!). To keep to her budget, Jenn avoids impulse buying at the grocery store on the way out of town. Instead, she is grabbing plastic containers full of leftovers from the fridge and whatever she has in the cupboards that look edible!
When she’s out in nature, ideas for her artwork abound. String art, stained glass hangings, watercolour and ink drawings; you name it, she’s doing it. Her nature inspired pieces are evolving with each adventure.
When she isn’t in the woods, you can often spot Jenn at one of Courtenay’s fairs and markets as a shopper and as a vendor. If you checked out Courtney’s wicked night market during the summer, you may have seen her behind a bunch of beautiful art . Her next artistic goal? To get involved in the Comox Valley Elevate Winter Bazaar coming early December.
So whether you’re a local or an abroad type of traveller, we hope you’re as inspired as much as we are to add more ‘yes’ into our life and to play outside more in beautiful BC.
